China trademark agent fee in 2026: what's a fair price?

Foreign brand owners must file through a locally recorded China agent, so agent fees are part of the cost of protecting a mark in China. Prices vary widely. This guide explains the usual ranges and — more importantly — what a quote should actually include.

Figures below are indicative market ranges for foreign-facing services in 2025–2026. Official CNIPA fees (currently RMB 270 per class for e-filing) are separate from professional fees. Always confirm a written, itemised quote.

Typical agent fee tiers (per class)

Service tierWhat's usually coveredIndicative professional fee
Basic filingApplication submission only; no prior search, minimal prosecution support.USD 150–400 / class
Standard packagePre-filing search, filing, power-of-attorney handling, first office-action response.USD 300–600 / class
Full serviceStrategy, comprehensive search report, filing, full prosecution, monitoring.USD 500–900+ / class

Low-end filing platforms can look attractive for a simple single-class mark, but they often exclude the search and office-action handling that foreign applicants most need in China's crowded register. A qualified agent who catches a sub-class conflict usually saves more than their fee.

What a fair quote should include

If any of these are billed as extras, treat it as a reason to ask why.

Costs that are usually extra

Budget tip: file related classes together. Fixed incidentals such as notarisation and power-of-attorney preparation are shared across classes in one filing, so multi-class matters benefit from economies of scale.

Questions to ask before you engage

  1. Is the first office-action response included, or billed separately?
  2. Are translation, notarisation and courier covered in the quote?
  3. Do you have experience with foreign clients in my industry?
  4. What is the total estimated cost through registration, including likely office actions?

Providers who answer these clearly and in writing are far more likely to deliver. Evasive answers about extras are a warning sign regardless of the advertised headline price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay a China trademark agent at all?

If you are a foreign applicant, yes. CNIPA requires a locally recorded agent to file and prosecute a China trademark application on your behalf. Domestic Chinese applicants may file themselves, but overseas brand owners cannot lodge directly.

What is included in a typical agent fee?

A fair per-class quote should at minimum include the basic filing, the first office-action response, and forwarding of the registration certificate. Search, classification advice and English reporting are commonly bundled by agencies serving foreign clients.

What costs are usually extra?

Subsequent office-action responses, trademark watching/monitoring, renewal reminders and formalities such as recordals of assignment or licence are typically billed separately. Always ask for an itemised quote before engaging.
